Nourishing vs Styling Products

The difference between using products/blowouts to nourish the hair versus styling the hair lies in the intent and the effect each has on the hair:

Nourishing the Hair:

• Purpose: Focuses on improving the health of the hair by providing essential moisture, vitamins, and proteins.

• Products Used: Shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, oils, serums, leave-in treatments, and heat protectants.

• Techniques: Blow-drying at a lower heat or air-drying, deep conditioning treatments, scalp massages, and protective styling that minimizes damage.

• Goal: Strengthen the hair shaft, repair damage, hydrate the scalp, and promote growth, while preventing split ends and dryness. Nourishing helps in achieving long-term hair health, shine, and softness.

Styling the Hair:

• Purpose: Focuses on the appearance, texture, and shape of the hair to achieve a specific look.

• Products Used: Styling gels, mousse, hairspray, volumizers, texturizers, and heat tools like flat irons, curling irons, and high-heat blow dryers.

• Techniques: Blowouts for volume and smoothness, curling or straightening for texture change, setting with rollers, or pinning hair in place with clips for specific styles.

• Goal: To achieve a polished or trendy look, control frizz, add volume, or create a specific style (like sleek, wavy, or curly). Styling often requires more manipulation, which may stress the hair.

In short, nourishment aims to care for and protect the hair’s health, while styling is about temporarily manipulating the hair for aesthetic purposes. It’s important to balance both, ensuring the hair remains strong and healthy while achieving your desired look.

The air is killing your hair along with the pony tail

Pollution presents significant challenges for hair health, particularly in urban environments. Airborne pollutants and harsh environmental conditions can negatively impact hair texture and strength. This external damage leads to dryness and contributes to breakage, making regular hair care essential for maintaining vitality and resilience.
In these settings, professional blowouts become a vital addition to hair care routines. A blowout offers more than just styling; it is a rejuvenating treatment that cleanses the hair and scalp, removing dirt, grime, and residual pollutants. Through this cleansing process, essential moisture is restored, helping to combat dryness due to environmental stressors.
Tight hairstyles can place unnecessary tension on the hair, compounding damage from pollution. In contrast, blowouts utilize a gentler styling approach, which reduces mechanical stress on the hair shafts. This technique minimizes tension-related damage, promoting healthier hair overall.
Incorporating regular blowouts into your hair care regimen can effectively counter the adverse effects of pollution. By ensuring that hair remains vibrant, nourished, and revitalized, individuals can confidently face their daily challenges. With hair that looks and feels its best, personal confidence is elevated, facilitating a positive approach to each day.

Hair in our older years

For older women who have neglected their hair care throughout their lives, the repercussions extend well beyond the surface. The impact manifests in a tapestry of physical changes: dryness, breakage, and thinning hair that represent years of neglect. Each strand of compromised hair serves as a reminder of a larger narrative—one that speaks to self-care choices made or overlooked.
As women confront the reality of their hair’s condition, a wave of regret often washes over them. They may reflect on the years spent sidelining hair care, recognizing that these decisions have echoed a broader theme of self-neglect. Hair, often seen as a reflection of one’s identity, carries a weight that transcends its physicality. It becomes symbolic of missed opportunities for self-expression and connection. This realization can trigger profound introspection about personal value and worth.
The vibrant hairstyles that once brought confidence and joy now sometimes morph into reminders of choices not made. Long gone are the days when hair color might have been an adventurous purple or playful curls graced a special occasion. Instead, women find themselves longing for a richness in their hair that mirrors the vibrancy they feel within.
This historical neglect prompts a reevaluation of self-love. Women may come to understand that nurturing their hair is not just about aesthetics; it is part of a broader dialogue around taking care of oneself. The process of redefining their relationship with hair care can lead to transformative experiences. Finding the right products, investing time into hair routines, or seeking professional help can instill a sense of empowerment and rejuvenation.
As they navigate these feelings, many discover that self-care rituals extend beyond the mere act of washing and styling hair. They become avenues for reconnecting with oneself—an opportunity to forge a fresh narrative that honors their journey. Embracing hair care as a form of self-love becomes a powerful statement about reclaiming agency over one’s image.
In seeking reconciliation between their past and present self-image, these women often realize that it's never too late to embark on a path of restoration. With patience and commitment, they can redefine their hair story—transforming what was once a source of regret into an emblem of resilience and renewal. The journey toward healthier hair may pave the way for renewed self-esteem, opening doors to a deeper understanding of self and a celebration of individuality, reflecting the beauty that comes with embracing one’s history while looking forward.

You are your best asset

Your body is undoubtedly your most significant asset and best investment, and maintaining it properly is crucial for both your physical health and mental well-being. Well-kept hair plays a vital role in enhancing your personal value, as it reflects a strong sense of self-care and a meticulous attention to detail. Healthy, vibrant hair can significantly boost your confidence, empowering you to make a positive impression in both personal interactions and professional settings. By investing time and resources into effective hair care, you not only improve its overall appearance but also create a daily reminder to prioritize your self-maintenance and overall health. Ultimately, caring for your hair is an integral part of recognizing and maximizing the true worth of your body as a whole, allowing you to embrace your identity with pride and assurance.

Take care of hair now because it will matter when you get older

Managing hair as we age is crucial, as both hair health and appearance can serve as indicators of our overall well-being. In our younger years, developing a solid hair care routine is fundamental. This includes not only regular trims to remove split ends but also consistent hydration to keep hair nourished and resilient.
Neglected hair can significantly affect how we perceive ourselves in our older years. Without proper care, hair can become dry, brittle, and lifeless, leading to feelings of frustration and dissatisfaction with our appearance. This can erode confidence and hinder our ability to present ourselves the way we desire. As we age, the physical signs of neglect—such as thinning, lack of shine, or more pronounced graying—can become more pronounced, potentially impacting our self-esteem.
Blowouts play a significant role in this routine. They enhance volume and shine while providing a thorough treatment with high-quality products and professional techniques. The heat and styling methods used during a blowout can help seal moisture into the hair, reducing frizz and improving texture. This maintenance helps fortify hair against environmental stressors and reduces the likelihood of damage over time.
Prioritizing hair health early fosters more manageable and vibrant hair in later years. By investing time and care into our hair now, we create a foundation that allows for easier styling and versatility as we age. This commitment enables us to continue expressing our personal style with confidence, regardless of changes in hair texture or thickness over the years. Taking these steps now can lead to a healthier, more vibrant appearance in the future, contributing to a more positive self-image as we navigate through the later stages of life.

There is no reward on the other side of neglecting yourself!

Neglecting ourselves, particularly in terms of personal grooming like getting our hair done, often stems from a complex mix of priorities and societal pressures. Many individuals prioritize work, family obligations, or financial constraints over self-care, viewing their own needs as less important. There’s also the idea that taking time for oneself is a luxury rather than a necessity, leading to guilt or feelings of selfishness when considering personal care.
In this context, a blowout can serve as a significant act of self-care. The process of getting a blowout not only refreshes our appearance but also provides a moment of solace from our busy lives. It can transform our mood, offering an instant boost in self-esteem. However, the act of postponing such treatments reflects a broader trend of sidelining our well-being. Individuals might think, "I’ll do it later," or "It’s not essential," only to find that this cycle of self-neglect begins to weigh heavily on their mental and emotional health.
Besides enhancing one's look, a blowout can be a vital step in breaking this cycle. It represents an opportunity to reclaim time for oneself, to acknowledge that self-care is crucial to overall well-being. Embracing personal grooming rituals can lead to a healthier relationship with oneself, where self-care is recognized as a necessity rather than a luxury. Prioritizing a simple blowout can spark a positive change, encouraging individuals to invest in their well-being and cultivate a sense of balance in their lives. Ultimately, it’s not just about the hair; it’s about nurturing self-worth and mental clarity, reminding us that we deserve care and attention.

I’m a mom, what are the benefits of a blowout?

Blowouts can benefit a mom by providing her with a convenient and efficient way to maintain a polished appearance despite her busy schedule. This hairstyle allows her to feel put-together and confident without having to spend a significant amount of time styling her hair. By saving time on hair maintenance, a mom can allocate more time and energy to other aspects of her life, such as taking care of her children or focusing on her career.
When a mom is perceived with a blowout hairstyle, she may be seen as someone who values self-care and pays attention to her appearance. This can contribute to a positive image of being well-groomed and organized, which may translate into being perceived as a competent and composed individual, especially in the eyes of her children. Additionally, the sleek and polished look of a blowout can exude professionalism and confidence, which can influence how others, including her children, view her capabilities and presence.

Making Time

When it comes to time, a lot of you talk about how busy you are and how you don’t have a lot of free time in your life. On top of not having a lot of disposable time, you have a lot of hair or the hair you do have requires a lot of work to get it where you like or just a place of good management. I encourage you to consider blowouts more regularly. Beyond just getting your hair done for weekend, you get blowouts because it saves you time in your day to day life. Getting Older

Aging is something that comes for all of us. With my own hair I’m dealing with gray hairs popping up more.  The texture changing.  Hair not growing in certain places like it used too.  On top of all those things the barber I was seeing for the last 3 years decided to move her talents to another state which means I’m currently in limbo.  We had a deep connection that is not easily replaceable.  So as each day goes by and my hair grows out of control and I look in that mirror and I know I don’t feel my most confident.  Could I go to someone else? Sure. But like any relationship that is deep it not always easy to just go see someone else. But I will get there.

I’m sharing my story because I know a lot of you or someone you know is in this space. Dealing with aging and how that is impacting your hair journey. You are dealing with all of a sudden you have two textures of hair happening. Gray hair is happening. Hair loss is happening. You are noticing that your color is not lasting as long.  Breakage is more frequent. The products all of a sudden don’t do the trick. Your blow dry takes a lot longer to complete. The flexibility you use to have to reach certain parts of your hair is diminishing and more.

These are all things that plague the hair journey as we age. It could be one or a combo of those things that you find yourself having to address.  This can be hard to deal with.  Add on top of that the things in our life that also need our attention. Our kids, partners, pets, jobs, businesses and it can be overwhelming.  Add on top of that the sea of products to choose from. The vast ocean of ideas and opinions on social media and the internet saying what you should be doing (including me 👀😂).

I know it can be a lot. This email is a gentle reminder that you are not alone and I’m here to be part of your solutions. Whether that is you booking blowouts to help you go through the seasons or booking a consultation where we lay out a longer term strategy that helps empower you on your hair journey for Everyday Healthy Hair.  Whichever way you choose, don’t go at it alone.  Hair has become complex for a number of reasons and it does take help. Even if you or someone you know is considered low maintenance.  This is coming from me who has spent 4 decades on this earth and 1 decade working with hair.  I’ve spent a quarter of my LIFE with all of you. Learning and developing and understanding and doing my best to not only give you good hair for a wedding you are going to, but to hopefully give you tools you can take with you on your journey.

Sending good energy to all of you 🫶

Shampoo Guidance

When it comes shampoo I advocate for a double shampoo. That is where we shampoo the hair once, rinse, and shampoo a second time. I find this helps with getting the hair clean and nourished which preps the hair for more efficient and effective styling.

During the shampoo you can use one type of shampoo twice if you only have one. I find two different shampoos off multiple benefits. Depending on how much styling product you use, a clarifying or detox can be a great 1st shampoo. These are good for removing buildup off the hair and scalp. The second shampoo can be for Volume if you want more height in your hair. Or, a thickening shampoo for more fullness or Anti-Frizz for a smoother look. Depending on what your hair needs and what you want it to do you can have a variety of combinations.

After the double shampoo make sure to rinse out thoroughly and apply conditioner. As for conditioner you just use one. Work it through the hair and give it time to work before rinsing thoroughly. If you have more than one alternate during each wash cycles to give your hair multiple benefits. You could also cocktail the two together.

As I said at the beginning of this, getting a good shampoo is the key to healthy hair and scalp which is the framework for effective and efficient styling.

Sorry to tell you, YOU CAN'T SKIP IT

We are in this space where we want to do less and less and still want results. We want to give the most minimal effort yet have the most major impact. We also want that as cheap as possible. Minimal effort, minimal investment, huge results.

This applies to a lot of things in life and I have been guilty as well. The truth is that for the results we want the work is going to be required. The effort is going to be required. The financial investment is going to be required. There is no short cut, there is no skip to the end. This rings true for hair care. Whatever hair you fantasize about is definitely doable but will require your effort. There is no instant product that fixes it. A magic hair tool to make it easier. It is going to take you waking up earlier. Staying up later at night. Lunch break hair care. Increasing the frequency you see your stylist. Investing in new products and tools.

This is not meant to scare or overwhelm you. These are all things that can be broken down to be implemented into your life that is realistic and sustainable and you don’t have to do it alone.

Mindset

It is the start of a new year which can also be a new opportunity to shift your mindset around hair. A lot of us get caught in a loop and we underestimate how hard it is to break. I’m here to get you out of the loop if you are in one.

Before we start with trying new products, or new tools, or a color change, or a big chop, The key to leveling up hair is mindset. You have to first acknowledge the loop that you are in and own it. If you are lazy with hair, if you are cheap with hair, if you overdue it with hair, you have to own it.

Next we have to own the level of commitment we realistically are going to have with leveling up hair. How much are we realistically going to invest. How much time are we really going to give it. So many fail at leveling up the hair because they start out hot and heavy out the gate at a unrealistic pace eventually running out of gas and reverting back to old habits.

Once you have your mind wrapped around the reality of your level up you can approach it in a way that is comfortable and sustainable in your life. The right mindset is the foundation that is laid that you will be able to build your level up.

Mood

You can change the mood are you in by simply getting your hair done. Life gets busy for all of us and it is easy to let something like your hair go. In a rush women tend to go for products that are convenient but may not offer the necessary benefits. Proper washing in the shower is replaced by speed in order to get in and get out. Brushing hair gets replaced with a messy bun or ponytail. Enough of ignoring hair can take its toll. Not only does the hair become compromised but your mood starts to shift when you look in the mirror and don’t like what you see.

If you are tired of blah hair, if you are tired of blah mood, something as simple as getting a blowout can change that vibe. You’d be surprised at the feeling you get when you see your hair in its peak state. Hair with more life, bounce, shine, voluminous, body, and strength can make all the difference.

So if you are stuck in a weird mood and are looking for a boost, don’t underestimate what good hair can do!

Are you starving your hair?

In the quest to do as little as possible to the hair sometimes forget to give the hair the nourishments it needs. Hair is a living thing and it needs food to stay strong and healthy. Imagine if you didn’t eat for 3 days how you would feel? You might not even make it that long. Imagine how weak you would feel? Imagine how your face and body would look? If you were malnourished you would be open to have more issues. The same is true for hair. Hair goes through the same thing. I’m not saying you need to be a product junkie and put a ton of things in your hair, but you do need to take time to feed it. It’s to many options available to help that are super quick and easy. Take the time to feed your hair. It will appreciate it and remember you gave it love. Trust me.

Today's hair products.

Habits can be a hard thing to break. Ideas and concepts that may have been true for a long time can be hard to let go of. Hanging on to old ideas and concepts can even work against you. That is the case when it comes to the idea of hair care products.

Yesteryear products tended to be heavy duty. That came from a era where the styles called for that. When the technology in product development was as advanced. As time moved on the styles changed. People wanted stuff that wasn’t heavy on the hair in order to achieve certain looks. Product company’s had the tech to match the needs.

Fast forward today and a lot of products are weightless except the ones that need to be heavy in order to create the style. The things is that mindset around products didn’t change for all women. I notice clients that still believe all hairsprays are heavy leaving the hair crunchy. They are missing out on strong hold hairsprays that are light and brush-able yet perform well. They are missing out on smoothing creams that will tame frizz and still allow for movement in the hair.

Embrace where we are today. A lot of things that you were taught are just old news now. You could be on the way to healthy style hair with just the switch of a mindset.
